Botox is a trade name used by Allergen for Botulinum toxin and basically it is a purified form of botulinum toxin which has both aesthetic and therapeutic uses. The trade name Botox has become so popular that people recognize trade name better than its actual name; just like we use the trade name Xerox for photocopy. Many of us get afraid to hear the word toxin but botulinum has the real role to play in dental treatments. It is the toxin that helps to age gracefully.

Are there any variants of Botulinum Toxin?

Yes, there are seven type of botulinum toxins which are available to us. It is from type A, B, C, D, E, F & G. The one which is used most commonly is type A; however if any individual gets resistant to type A then we can use type B botulinum toxin. The type B botulinum Toxin is known as Myoblock.

How Botulinum Toxin works?

Botox has its action on the muscle; it acts on SNAP 25 and doesn't let the muscle contract. It takes around 1.5-2 hours to bind to the nerve and it can take anywhere between 2 to 10 days to show full clinical effect. The effect of botox last from 3 months to 6 months varying individual to individual.

Communication Tips For Beginners In Implant Practice

Communication Tips For Beginners In Implant Practice

A decade back when I started Implant practice, I used to think that implantology is a complex procedure but realized it later that the procedure is simple and not the communication part. Over these ten years I made mistakes, learnt from them and tried to improve myself on both aspects of implantology. Even I faced complications sometimes but trust me 90% of these complications were not related to the implant procedure but the communication with patients. I have observed that, usually doctors become master in implant procedures in short time but they lack the art of communication which is equally or in my words even more important. Unfortunately I was not that lucky to have somebody to tell me on how to communicate and most of the things that I have shared below have been learnt/discovered by myself.

Manage your dental plan and related things to dentistry and much more with DentistFriend.com dental portal.

Here are few tips for beginners who have started implant practice recently:

1. Instead of trying to convince the patient for implants, always try to explain implants.

2. Even before explaining implants to patient make sure that you are very much convinced that implant is really the best option for the respective patient, then only you can explain it very well to patient.

3. Remember ethical things are always easier to explain for every doctor and are always digestible to patients.

4. Never do false promises like "It will be free of complications till you live" etc. Any dental procedure right from RCT to Crown & Bridges or even simple filling may fail. Same way Implants can also fail and there can be many reasons for failure. So be realistic and explain your patients that implants may fail but it's long term success ratio is relatively high in comparison with all other substitute procedures to implants.

Here is how you can deal with some common objections raised by implant patients.

Objection 1: Implants are expensive

Any treatment which comes nearest to most natural replacement closest to what God has given will be having more cost than any intermediate or short term replacement.

You should always give option of economical treatments to your patients while informing that they are far away from natural replacement and either intermediate or short span.

Objection 2: I don't want to go for surgery

Always tell the patient that placement of an implant is 30-60 min procedure with single local anesthesia and it usually do not have any post operative complications.

(In fact I personally feel that it is less complicated than surgical removal of tooth. It really does absolutely no complications if one follow strict sterilization and disinfection protocol)

Objection 3: Implants warranty and longevity

You can say that it works long term except the prosthesis which might have to be changed and if you follow strict & proper cleaning and maintenance (which in fact required in any body procedure or replacement) then it's almost permanent. You should also suggest the patient that mostly complications come in first few months. Implant companies are giving life time warranties so even if implant fails there is a scope of re-procedure.

Objection 4: More implants means more money to be spent (for full mouth cases)

You can confirm with the patient if he is looking for long term or short term solution. Explain the patient that if he wants, good aesthetics, mastication and phonetics then definitely implants are the only choices. Implants cost few more bucks but it is still cheap with the kind of health and quality patient gets. In fact all the current replacement procedures like Total Knee Replacement, CABG, Stents, Hair Transplant etc are not economical too.

Friends, implants are miracle in dentistry. If you really want to grow your practice then do Implants. The more you place implants, more confident you will get and when you have confidence you automatically get that positive energy to explain. And believe me if you follow these things in your initial days of implant practice; in future you will never ever have to worry about question & answers by your patients.

And lastly don't worry. Do implants!

Money is really By-product...

Don't go for it rather go for EXCELLENCY ..!

What After BDS: MBA From Australia

What After BDS: MBA From Australia

Third year of my graduation was the realization point for me that I'm really not loving what I'm doing. Days were going fine with everyone around but nights were depressing. I used to think a lot about how I'm going to deal with what I'm feeling. It used to scare me. I often used to get depressed and think that what I'm doing now is safer and better than changing my field completely and who knows, I might get too unhappy and regret my decision.

How to settle in abroad after BDS in India to know visit our dental portal DentistFriend.com

Yes, I was thinking of changing my field and get into management full time and that's how the search for other opportunities started. To do MBA from India, is a very tedious procedure and was stressing me out. My parents were aware of this and they completely supported my decision. Suddenly, my parents impromptu business visit to Australia somehow turned my world upside down for better. It was my father who suggested me to do research and look for better universities and that's how my journey started. If you are planning to study abroad after your BDS from India then, before you proceed; do read my blog post on "Things To Consider Before Studying Abroad"

If you guys are really interested in pursuing MBA in hospital management from Australia then here are the answers to some common questions,

Why MBA in Hospital Management?

MBA in hospital management has good scope in India and other countries due to the increase in awareness among people. It has emerged as a new career opportunity not only for doctors but also for other science graduates. After completing MBA, there are enough options you can opt for. You can get into hospital management or can join companies related to health and marketing. Scope is vast but the clarity and the assurance about why you really want to do it, is important. All these things doesn't matter unless and until you have the interest for management. If you are sure that you really enjoy management than clinical field then you should completely go for it.

Why I chose Australia?

1.Procedure is relatively simple.

2.Has some really good universities.

3.Has really good scope in health management.

4.Flexible enough to work and study as well. So you can earn while studying.

Australian Student visa allows you to study full time and work part time for 20hrs a week, which is sufficient for your living expenses. Part time work in Australia is really well paid and you can earn enough to pay your bills. To work, you must have a tax file number, superannuation details (sometimes) and a bank account for the processing of your pay. There are student loans available, which you can take advantage of, for paying tution fees.

If you are looking forward to earn while studying, then talk to people who are already doing it. Talk to them about how you can work and manage studies as well. Make sure, you don't hamper your studies by working full time.

First 6 months are tough as you struggle with different study pattern so I would suggest, not to work for first semester. Once you know how things work, you can start applying for jobs. Doing odd jobs is not wrong but getting stuck into them is. Start applying for internship programme, work as a dental assistant or any other job related to clinical field. It will give you more exposure and that work experience will be helpful for you, after you are done with masters to get a good job in your own field.

How to apply?

You need to clear IELTS exam and to get into good universities, you need 7.5/8 band and trust me, it is not difficult to achieve that. If you find it gruelling, then there are some apps available on App Store which will really help you out to prepare for exam. You can solve papers when you are free at home. They will give you a clear idea of how the exam pattern is. You can refer some books and online stuff too, rather than joining coaching classes.

Things you need to take care of before going.

1. Bank and credit/debit cards: National Australian bank (NAB) has a branch in Mumbai and all you have to do is call them and email them the required documents and your account will be ready. (Yes, all can be done by sitting at home) when you reach there, you have to go to the branch given to you, with your documents and you will be given your debit card, the same day.

2. Handling documents: Take atleast 3-4 copies of your original documents and carry them whenever is needed rather than carrying the original ones to avoid any unfortunate events of theft or loss. Email yourself a copy of each document too.

3. Get all necessary health check ups and vaccinations and pay for your health insurance too, for the period of your stay.

4. Make sure all your flights, courses, housing and itinerary are established and secured before leaving.

5. If you don't want to stay in the university rooms which are way expensive, you can always search for rooms or talk to the students who are already studying there and arrange your Accomodation which is cheap and comfortable.

Be prepared completely before going. Don't leave anything for the last moment or please, don't ignore stuff and think that you will somehow manage after going there because it's tough as you are in a completely different country and are not familiar with people

Myths & Facts About Doctors

Myths & Facts About Doctors

Myth 1: "Only medical profession is a noble profession"

Fact: Every profession, whether of a teacher, soldier, tailor or shopkeeper, is noble, if done with sincerity and integrity. A careless doctor can kill one, a careless  driver can kill dozens, a careless engineer can kill hundreds..

Choose the DentistFriend.com dental portal to sell or buy second hand dental equipment's

Myth 2: "As it is a service to humanity, doctors should not run after money."

Fact: Money is an important measure of success. Running after it is not good for anybody, but earning more money by doing more work is not a moral crime. And all who advising doctors, themselves running after money, aren't they?

Myth 3: "Most of the time, doctors do not understand the disease and write unnecessary and costly drugs and advise tests and treat on a trial basis."

Fact: First of all, the doctor patient relationship is based on trust, if you do not trust your doctor, go to another one. Medical science is a lifelong learning process, and all treatment, to some extent is based on trial and error. The same medicine, which works for one patient may not work on another.

Second, the responsibility of providing quality drugs at affordable prices lies not with the doctor, but with the state authorities, just like providing for better roads, unadulterated quality food and dairy products, uninterrupted power and water supply etc and etc. Like cloths, cars and mobile phones, costly drugs are generally better than cheap ones. However, if the government makes it mandatory to write generics, it should ensure quality and the consequence of poor/non efficacy should not be blamed on doctors.

Third, tests are done for patient’s own safety. Just like wearing a helmet or seat belt, investigations increase the safety. Most of the doctors in india are trained to work on clinical hunch and common sense and not rely too much on tests, and advise much less tests than what is actually written in the book or done in the developed world.

Myth 4: "Treatment costs are increasing irrationally."

Fact: As compared to western world, treatment costs in India are still very low, and many foreigners are coming here for this reason. And it would be worthwhile to think about any other service or product with as rapid advancement in technology and equipment as medical science, whose cost is not increasing

Myth 5: "Doctors are next to God."

Fact: Doctors are as human as can be. They also get tired, fall sick, have family commitments, get upset and stressed sometimes and can suffer from all the frailties of a human being. If anyone wanted to be treated by God then they can visit the temple.

Career Options After BDS From India

Career Options After BDS From India

Are you confused with what to do after your BDS? Read on, probably you will get your answer.
Napoleon said, "The starting point of all achievement is Desire". So dear anonymous, first get it clear in your head, how do you daydream yourself like?

To know best dental courses after BDS in india visit out dental portal DentistFriend

Is it that you want to be that Dentist who could treat even the most complicated cases with superb finishing; Is it that you want to be known as a researcher and develop advanced dental materials or carry out some large scale surveys, do you want to go slow and steady-learn and explore and finally take a long term settlement; are you a fairly forceful personality who see yourself in a corporate environment-in your chamber controlling things and people around you; do you hate being in this field and think B.D.S was a forced error; or do you say damn doesn't matter how, but I just want to earn some money while I am young and enjoy life!

There are many awesome avenues after B.D.S. and they are all excellent!!! Provided you choose the one you like, and then you tread that path with complete devotion and honesty. B.D.S. is fun, I mean even if you are an insincere student, no matter how bad your teachers were or how average your scores were etc., that was all fun-after graduation comes the serious part of life. So leave all your insincerity (if any) in the college life itself and step in the professional world as agoal oriented person.

If you are interested in clinics, focus very hard on exclusive P.G. prep and try to get clinical M.D.S. from a government college, failing so, if you may afford, purchase an M.D.S clinical seat in good private college and do not waste precious years, just get rolling in continuity. M.D.S. gives you a maturing curve and makes you a specialist-good consultant may earn up 3-4 lakhs a month. If you do not want to study and still are good at clinics, set up your own clinic, do those little hands-on courses, be pro active in promotion of your clinic, work sincerely, you will earn handsomely. After B.D.S, if you are confident of your ability, you may go to places like Maldives who offer you over 1 lakh/month for a fairly undemanding practice. If you are good at dentistry, you may also try D.D.S. in U.S., yeah, it needs Nat board exams and sometimes M.S. but still worth all the labor, you will end up earning much more than in India in the longer run. If you areresearch oriented go for M.S. in bio-materials, or, seek a PhD program, 5-6 years looks long from here, but when you complete it, you would have frog leaped your peers.

If you did not enjoy that art and sculpturing, if you were a very good convincer, yet had an average finishing with your work-that student who would always work out of the phantom heads, or convince batch mates to work for you, then you may go for allied options like M.D.S. in community dentistry or for that matter O.D.M.R. Community work gives you a possibility to work with W.H.O etc, For staying connected to dentistry, yet, not having to work as a clinician M.P.H in India or D.P.H. in U.S. are good options. You may also go for M.H.A. or M.Rural health after all these 2 yr courses, you would earn decent in India or abroad.

In the end, even if you don't know how to extract a grade 3 mobile incisor, you may still set up a clinic, convince people for specialty practice and still end up earning more than an average skilled practitioner. You may go to Australia and do M.B.A. and while you still study, earn a decent amount doing weekend jobs.

Even if you become a millionaire, you cannot buy that beaconed car labeled Government of India-if you loved that sight and work for a larger public base, you may try U.P.S.C. exams after BDS as well. The Short Commission in INDIAN ARMED FORCES is one fine life defining job, you are an officer there and no work carries more pride and honor than working for the Indian military.

Mate, after B.D.S. you have some fantastic cards in hand, and it is a win-win situation no matter what you pick, when you got in B.D.S. you may have been 17-18 and many a times it is just an impulse decision to do B.D.S., but now you are mature enough to think about your liking....so get it clear, choose one and go for it, leave no scope for regret after choosing and if you are sincere in your field, you will end up a winner!!!

P.S.- get out of that anonymous, we all have sailed the same boat.
